Took the plunge today and bought the hardware for my new desktop/development machine. The parts should be in by Friday. The goal was maximum performance without going over the top on cost. Compromise just a bit off the very latest, but stay out on the front edge. I managed to do it for under $1200.
P4 Prescott Processor 2.80GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB Cache
-- Ok, that's going to scream....(HYPERTHREADING means its almost like a dual processor machine)
Intel D875PBZLK i875P P4 800FSB DDR ATX Motherboard w/Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA
-- Especially when I drop it in Intel's awesome system board
Corsair TWINX1024-3200 1GB Kit DDR400 XMS3200 Dual-Channel Memory w/Heat Spreader
-- And then pair it up with 1gb of specially picked RAM
(2x) IBM Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 80GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer
-- And a pair of good Serial ATA drives (3.0m/sec) in a RAID configuration
ATI Radeon 9600 4x/8x AGP Video with 128megs of DDR Ram
-- And run both LCD Panels,
-- with 1click to select which programs run on which desktop
-- like having two pc's with a shared keyboard and mouse, except that
-- you can copy and paste and move stuff around between them instantly
Sony DWU18A Internal DVD±RW Drive (Beige) w/NTI DVD-Maker Gold Suite Software
-- So I can read & write pretty much anything shiny and round
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy LS Sound Card
-- Decent sound, but I'm not into sound much anyway
Antec TruePower True330 330W Power Supply
-- Quiet, Reliable, & Stable power with distinct circuits for each device (yes, it makes a difference)
TEAC FD235HFC291S 1.44MB 3.5in PS/2 Floppy Disk Drive
-- gotta have one, and they're cheap
