Tracking my new eMac as it is finally shipped -- a long story involving bad weather and poor communication -- the ball is definitely not being dropped by Fed-Ex. At midnight they pick up a trailer loaded by a customer in Harrisburg. By 2:22am the trailer is unloaded in Hartford and sorted, by 3:48am it leaves Hartford, by 6:22 its in Portland, and an hour later its on the truck headed to my house.
Given that it takes me about 3 hours to drive to Hartford, it is amazing to me that it is exactly 4 hours from the first time a fed ex person sees this package in Hartford (prior to that, it was handled only by the shipper) to the time the package is on a local delivery van. That means the package spent 150 minutes total being sorted or waiting for a truck.
Think about that - this package spent less time waiting to be sorted or put on a truck then I spend waiting or passing security in a one way air travel trip.
