Friends, Romans, Countryman -- fellow geeks all; does it matter if the man who brought us the T-Bone Steak as a diet aid was himself overweight when he died?
Now understand, I'm not on a low carb diet -- you can have my carbs when you pry them from my cold, dead, fat encapsulated hands (or when I put them down to slam some caffeine). I'm not even sure, from what I read, that a low carb diet that reduces your weight at the possible expense of your kidneys, liver, and dare I say bowels is such a good thing for most people. Of course, if you're in serious health crises due to your weight, and Dr. Atkins' bit of magic works for you than its probably worth it. I can name a couple of good friends who will likely be with us longer as a result.
What the Atkins diet did was poke a big stick at conventional wisdom. The fact is, for whatever reason, millions of people are loosing weight by putting themselves in a nearly constant state of ketoses. The long term results of that are probably still to be determined -- but again, think of all those establishment types who have had to go back and eat their own high carb words now that its been proven effective (if not always wise).
Lets try to remember Dr. Atkins for the contribution he makes to contrarian thought while the rest of the medical world tries to figure out why it works and what we can learn from it. The results may be more important in the long run than a few pounds among friends.
