A new lease on life for this 'old' machine. I'd looked into replacing it because it can't handle more than 1gb of RAM. That's enough for most work, but for demos and things I wanted to go to 2gb so I can more comfortably run a few virtual machines at once. Dell had a great sale, basically half off on most home laptops but they chickened out and pulled the Inspiron 9100 from the sale, so nothing else was worth it. I ended up just getting a new 60gb 7200rpm drive from Newegg. Finally, someone makes a pretty speedy laptop drive. The difference is seriously impressive.
Added a cheap 5db gain external antennae for the Orinoco wireless card and wow! I drove home from the fire station last night, and at no time was unable to connect to a wide open access point somewhere nearby. Sad for the security of those people running them, but great for those of us who occasionally need to pull the car over and connect to the net to provide some support for something.
