My wife's parents have this stunning property out on Davis Point in Friendship, Maine. Its right on the water looking into the rocky coastal waters here, on a protected inlet off the bay. The view is of rocky shores, small islands, rare birds, lobster boats, and a few clouds for scenic impact.
The view's been here forever, but until recently it was hard to plan a weekend to view it. Internet access has been dial-out only and cell phones and pagers are iffy at best. Being on call for emergency support means you can't be 2 hours from contact.
Well, Adelphia now has cable modem access up here so we've got the house online, and by using a combination of linksys 802.11g router and and an access point which can act as a repeater the entire house, yard, dock, and studio/guesthouse are covered in a high speed cloud.
For me, that means the freedom to watch the kids enjoy the coast; the freedom to hang out on the porch in cool breezes and write a blog entry or surf slashdot for new ways to sound hip and cool. I suppose I could work too if I had to. ;-)
