Well, my test platform ( allSpark ) had to undergo a reinstall. The Domino version 8 install won't run properly on CENTOS 4, which is what I had on there. CENTOS 5 works fine though. I'm sure with enough digging I could have found what was missing and added the right packages. I think it was java related. In any case, neither is a "supported" platform so it may be a bit of a moot point.
For those who follow such things, I can confirm that CENTOS 5 does provide all the goodies the Domino 8 server needs.
Just to point out that when it comes to performance, there is no "Always Right" answer....I'm running on a dual core AMD Athlon 64 with 2gb of RAM and SATA Raid, with a spare drive for my transaction logs and view temp rebuilds. In my case, I'm going to put both of those on the same drive. For Domino performance, that's not optimal, but in this case my goal is to push all Domino related I/O hogging stuff off the primary file system so that other things on the server won't get bogged down.

I'm struggeling with the domino server on centos 5. I've got the server running
in listening mode but when i try to connect to it via jconsole i get a lot of
java errors. If i try starting the gui on the server i get "Please edit your
shell's DISPLAY environment variable". Any suggestions?
