Keeping things in perspective - from a hazmat drill, me in a class B suit

| Hi all! I thought you might enjoy some pictures of your favorite computer geek / firefighter doing a haz-mat refresher drill. This took place a few days ago on a Thursday night. The idea is to simulate a decontamination procedure at a hazardous materials incident. I volunteered to be one of two people to wear the class-b suit and be covered with ketchup and chocolate sauce (on the suit) to them be "decontaminated". And hey, doesn't a t-shirt that says "Hack my network and die!" carry a bit of extra punch when the guy wearing it is wearing a SCOTT air pack and putting on a class-b chem suit? |
From the time the suit is closed around you to the time you are through with the decontamination area, the only air you have is what comes from the bottle on your back. In this case, I was wearing a 1 hour bottle which is twice the size we normally wear into buildings. I was in the suit for about 45 minutes.
Below that, I've included a few pictures from the previous Thursday night drill. That night we took the Heavy Rescue down to the local salvage yard which donated a few old cars for us to practice extrication. We also had some new tools to try out from the manufacturer so it was a good bit of controlled mayhem. If you ever need to be removed from your car, Cumberland is a good place to be. We practice the fine (if not always pretty) art of removing the vehicle from the patient, not the patient from the vehicle. Let me tell you -- if the car wasn't totaled when we started, it will be when we're done. Enjoy....

We just finished a nuclear haz-mat drill since our fire company is the collection site for workers from Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plant in South Central PA. I had the fun job of transporting the dirty victims to the hospital. The joys of EMS!
