Alright. If you haven't yet read the latest whitepaper from Lotus that talks about strategy, you need to. Right now. Go ahead, I'll wait.
Back? Ok. Notice anything? Here's some key points:
Notes is not described as "80's technology" to be backburnered in favor of new better stronger faster technologies. This document (which I have it on good authority is a fully supported and totally quality controlled version of The Message) states really clearly that there is no replacement for the Domino server on the horizon. It will continue to be a centerpiece for stand-alone solutions and messaging in shops that want to take advantage of its inexpensive all-in-one nature. Its the Swiss Army Knife.
The Notes client continues to be advanced. They're clearly going to use the notes CLIENT as the way to showcase the new stuff. They'll stick portal on it as one of the welcome page options, and go from there. My guess is you'll eventually see some kind of native portlet support -- whatever that ends up meaning.
The best news, IMO, is that DESIGNER is getting major enhancements. Driven first by the need to put DB2 on the back-end (optionally), they've done the work to display SQL queries in views -- that's pictured right in the document. What impresses me here, is that they didn't just make a db property checkbox, or a server setting that says "use DB2 instead of the file system". They may do that too for all I know, but they ALSO have clearly added direct functionality to the designer client. It looks like at the very least they finished (or are finishing) the work on making "virtual views" that didn't make it into version 6. A little bird told me the thing to watch here will be how security gets handled.
Yeah, yeah. I know -- there's a hard sell in this document on Portal and Workplace. I pretty much know what portal is, so its easy to decide if its right for you or not when we talk. But what about Workplace? From what I can tell, this is a strategy still to be watched more for what it becomes, than for what it now is. I'll be watching with you.
