Even though he lost out in the primaries a few years back, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona has absolutely not fallen back into the relative obscurity of that southwestern state. By staying his ground in the relative middle ground and refusing to unreservedly support the President on either his more socially conservative agenda, his fiscally controversial moves, or his enthusiastic military adventures the senator has caught the eye of the media and the public alike.
Persistent rumors of his being courted as a potential running mate on the Democratic ticket, followed by the Bush campaign's rush to show him in their corner have ended up creating the best image any politician could dream of. By being courted on the left he gains support and respect from the center, by staying the course he looks firm in his resolve and loyal -- loyalty already unquestionable as one of the most well know former prisoners of war in our country's history.
In short, John McCain has moved to the very foreground of American Politics this year. In an election that hangs on a hair's breadth difference, it could well be a few choice words from the Senator which make the difference. Could thoughts of 2008 be far from his mind?

will bring 2008 fairly quickly whether Bush or Kerry wins this time around)
