Where, exactly, is Cumberland Maine anyway?
By Andrew Pollack on 08/05/2007 at 10:27 PM EDTI get asked all the time from people, "Where is Cumberland?" so I decided to post a couple of pictures from Google Earth. Its pretty far Northeast -- about as far as you can go and still be in the US (though people here call it "Southern Maine". I've marked on the map both Cumberland, and further up the coast Friendship, Maine. The next posting has a bunch of pictures taken in Friendship from my In-Laws' place there. This post should add some perspective.

You comments about Cumberland, ME are not really accurate. It is not that close
to Canada, and Cumberland is both a County and a town. Friendship, ME is
really not very close. Portland, ME, the business hub of the state is only 104
miles from Boston.

The readers of this site are almost all from much more distant places. From
the perspective of someone in Europe or the Southwestern part of the U.S., my
comments reflect that position.
Just like to me, anything south of Philly is considered the Deep South, and
anything west of Ohio is "West".
If you're not someone who lives in New England, anyplace that is within a one
day drive to the border is pretty far Northeast.
