A Barb's suggestion, and with admitted reluctance (due to the huge volume of work I have to get done before Lotusphere) I took the day off and we took the three kids to Sunday River for a day of skiing. The weather was perfect -- just below freezing at the base, about 10 degrees Fahrenheit less at the summit, and with just a light wind and some cloud cover. The conditions were as nearly as good as they get on the East Coast (which tends toward hardback with ice) and we had a great time.
Barb hasn't gone skiing in years, and Caitlin had never been. She's six. Well, Barb did fine -- she skis cautiously and stays upright. Ari had a little trouble getting her feet under her but got her mojo up by the end of the day and skied with me down a fairly tough intermediate slope called "American Express" off the Barker Mountain lift. Coryn started off with an explosive amount of energy. I had no idea she skied so well. My boots were killing me so I opted to go get them fixed early on. She came with me. The route to the lodge took us down a great intermediate trail called "Escapade". Like a fool, I asked if she was sure she was up to it. She is 10 years old. After saying "Sure dad." she proceeded to beat me to the bottom at a pace I doubt I could have kept up with had I tried. Caitlin also had fun. The Ski school there is the best I've ever seen. By the end of the day, she as confident -- if not completely skilled yet -- on skis.
