Its Sunday afternoon, and I've got all the kids to watch. My youngest (4) has a birthday party to attend, being held in Portland at the "Chuck E Cheese's" pizza & playground place. This is a brightly colored, very loud, warehouse of a building filled with tables, bad music, mouse-like giant sized animatronic musicians, video games, climbing playgrounds, and bad pizza. Oh, and about 1000 kids.
What's redeeming, is that while the kids are playing, I can sit and work, read, study -- whatever. The place has enough security that I don't need to worry about someone walking off with my kids -- unless they can fake the U.V. hand stamps or bull past the 16 year old 80 pound blonde girl at the door.
So, how am I'm wring to you? My laptop now has wireless net access thanks to Verizon Wireless. It claims to be 'high speed' -- and its definitely better than a digital phone used with a serial port as a modem. In practice, its a bit faster than using a modem from a hotel room on a dial-up line. That doesn't tell the whole story though. What's REALLY cool is that it works nearly everywhere. I have yet to be in truckstop on major highway, an airport, a town, anywhere in the US where I couldn't instantly be online. I can replicate my Notes data while walking from gate to gate in any airport -- just start the process, close the laptop, and re-open it when I get where I'm going. The exception to this, is Northern Maine. That starts about 20 miles North of where I live, and frankly the electronic world pretty much ends. Nextel phones stop working 5 miles from me, by 25 miles north if you don't have an analog capable phone, you're SOL.
Ah well. We're getting there.
