Explorers and Junior Firefighters from several towns were invited to participate in this year's Academy. The students lived at the station for five days, training in all aspects of firefighting. They ran calls with the fire department and were able to do nearly everything firefighters do.
These pictures were taken at the Yarmouth, Maine training site. This structure has three floors and a basement and has been made safe for training. It has shutters for the windows and doors which can be quickly opened if need be, has two "Burn Rooms" which are protected with emergency sprinkers and are lined to prevent burns getting to the rest of the building, and has a removeable/replaceable hatch on the roof for practicing vent cuts.
Students were not exposed to real smoke or fire condititions, however. Any smoke you see in these pictures is strictly "hollywood" smoke from a machine - like at a concert or party. If a student were to remove their mask, the fake smoke is perfectly ok to breathe.
