So here I am whining at Alan Lepofsky (I'd link to him, but he doesn't blog yet that I know of) about lack of programmability in the bookmarks and desktop, when he says "hunh? Bookmarks are just documents!" -- or something like that.
Well, I guess I hadn't looked in a while. Its true. The folders are just folders, the views are just views. Of course , most of the functional data seems to be stored in two rich text fields called "URL" and "URLICON" -- which don't show up as anything if you add them to the form.
I'll have to bug Ben to tell me what's in those. I notice that they always seem to be 66 bytes and 40 bytes. What do you suppose 66 bytes could be? Well, we know at least three things must be there. The server name, the replicaid, and the filepath to the database. We know that opening bookmarks works on a pathname basis and not just by replicaid based on observed behavior. It makes no sense to store those in a way that is always 66 bytes. A universalid is 64 bytes. That's kind of interesting. Speaking of interesting, take a run through the names of the profile documents. Those look interesting, no?
Friends, this needs more looking into. Hey, Ben -- tell us what's in that 66 bytes. ;-)
