I think there's a lot to say about Designer in Eclipse. There's some great potential there, and there is some massive user interface work needed. There are things missing, and there are new features added in that are great but not fully usable against existing applications without serious re-work.
My one sentence first impression:
"DDE in 8.5 Beta is a giant bucket full of features blended in a mixer and poured into an eclipse bowl that someone forgot to clean out first."
Some of the user interface -- like the high contrast grey/white alternating rows of design element views -- can only be called "retina searingly bad". It makes the infamous photo of Brittany Spears getting out of her limo look attractive and inviting by comparison.
For the love of FSM, someone please give Mary Beth Raven's team more than just lip service on this stuff. Her team needs to not only have a few hours to view and comment, but should have absolute VETO power on anything that goes out the door that customers and developers will see. Its time to stop releasing software to the public that looks like a development team mock-up that was built to see if the features work before being sent to someone else to make comprehensible and useable.
