Well I did it. I have the license via the Ms. "Action Pack" and I decided to upgrade my laptop to XP/PRO from home. I wanted a few features around offline files and domain login. I've waited until I had a break and didn't need the thing for a week or so since I'm always afraid I'll have to wipe it and start over when I do these things. The laptop was a test for my workstation.
So I popped in the CD, started the setup program and choose upgrade. First off, my old PC/Anywhere was marked "incompatible". It worked fine, but so be it. I removed it and tried again.
About 90% done the thing bluescreened. From that point forward, It would not work. I booted from the cdrom and it said I could "continue" the upgrade. It appeared to pretty much start over. Same thing. Bang. Blue screen near the end.
DOH!
Finally, as a last ditch attempt I booted from the CDROM and selected to repair a damaged installation. It took a while, but it did work. Then of course I had to go to the update site and re-install a couple of dozen patches and updates (with about 6 reboots in the process).
All seems well now though. I give this one 3 out of 5 stars. On the one hand, it did finally work and I didn't loose data. On the other hand, it was ugly and an end user was unlikely to be successful.
