Google, as a company, reminds me of some of my geek friends. They don't accept for a second that things have to work the way they have always worked. Its what made their search engine better than anyone else's for a long time. Its also why GMAIL works for some many people -- particularly those who have never lived in Notes -- better than other mail software. They've extended search to search other things -- Google Images for example is a favorite of mine.
Now comes IPO time. Most of the tech people I know would be thrilled to get that far. By that time they're paired up with business people and being hearded through the complexities of going public. Some do well, many do not. This wasn't good enough for the folks at Google. I don't know if what they did was better, ultimately, for themselves or their shareholders. I do know they made some mistakes -- these seem to be just the kind of mistakes you would make if you weren't allowing yourself to be lead too rigidly through the process.
It will be interesting to watch this company as they go forward.
